I have a Conair straightener that I got from WalMart (not wally world brand though). I spent $30 on it, and it's well worth it. My hair gets extremely straight using it- and i have pretty thick hair. It's red, I don't know the model/ name of the product though.
I also have a Conair Ion Shine Hair Dryer- that helps to keep my hair flatter (no frizzies or flyaways) before I start straightening and it works great. I believe it was $25. So if you buy the hair dryer and the straightener I have- it'll cost ya $55.
Hope that helps!
I had one for 3 years. It was from Titanium Tools. It worked amazingly for that long, until I broke it. It worked so well that I went and bought the exact same thing again.
They are sold at Sally Beauty Stores and are right around $50.
I have one that i got for 200 dollars and it rocks....The better ones run in the 100-150 dollars zone...but for a cheaper one look for one at Sally...they have good ones..
I use a Sedu (www.folica.com) and it's awesome, but it was $125 when it came out. I think it costs $99 now since it's an older version, but it's well worth the money.
But if you still want a cheaper straightener....

That's an example of a decent cheap straightener. You should always look for one with ceramic plates, but if it's under $80, then the plates are almost ALWAYS just ceramic coated, and the coating will wear away after a few months (sometimes). Once that happens, the metal is exposed and THAT. WILL. FRY. YOUR. HAIR. no doubt about it!
Since you're using a coated plated straightener, I'd use some decent heat protectant. CHI silk infusion is amazing:

Small bottle, but you don't need a lot everytime you straighten your hair. I've been using the same bottle for 6 months and I'm not even halfway through, that's how little you need!
Along with that, I use tresumme heat tamer:

They both keep your hair from smelling like crap after you straighten it, and they keep it from being fried so much =]
Plus, you should clean your straightener every now and then. You know it needs to be cleaned when it's heating up and something starts to smell. I use sedu hair iron straightener, but I'm sure any type would work, I think you can even use rubbing alcohol. Just make sure it's all off before you turn it on =]
